With nearly one million people already infected with HIV and the largest burden of drug-resistant TB in the world, Russia is in on the verge of being engulfed by epidemics which could undermine the prosperity and stability of the country and the region. In the past three years there has been a surge in local and global efforts to address these threats, led by innovative community programs, growing government leadership, and a massive injection of resources by the Global Fund.

How successful have these recent efforts been? What is being done to tackle the unique challenges of the epidemics in these countries, such as rampant intravenous drug use, overcrowded prisons. How will diseases affect Russias attempt to reassert itself on the world stage? And are the prevention efforts in time to stop the millions of deaths that would result from full-blown epidemics in these countries?

This tour aims to give you an opportunity to examine these and other important questions, witnessing first-hand the growing burden of the epidemics and the inspiring stories of local efforts to contain them.

From May 10-14, the tour will take participants to two cities in Russia, Saratov in the south followed by the Siberian city of Tomsk. Visits will be made to a wide range of sites at the heart of the epidemics in these countries, including prisons, army barracks, hospitals, and community harm reduction centres for drug users. Participants will also have an opportunity to meet and interview a variety of individuals such as patients, health care workers, political figures, and religious leaders.

The tour will conclude on 14 May in Moscow with site visits to business based HIV/AIDS initiatives and a briefing with selected presenters and delegates arriving to attend the first ever Regional HIV/AIDS Conference to be held in Eastern Europe (May 15-17). We expect that this tour will generate unique material to support coverage of this meeting and the G8 Summit in St. Petersburg in July, at which the Russian Government plans to focus on global pandemics such as HIV/AIDS, TB and avian flu.
